Organic To Go uses biodegradable plastics for our salad containers and cold drink cups. And we are converting all of our cold plastic containers to the same material. Biodegradable Plastics (GreenPLA) can be used as conventional plastics, but on disposal they decompose to water and carbon dioxide by the action of microorganisms commonly existing in the natural environment. They can, thus, be returned to nature.
Taken from plants such as corn, the technology for GreenPLA produces the renewable resource-based resin by tapping into the carbon stored in the plant starches, which are then broken down into natural plant sugars. During a process of fermentation and separation, the carbon and other elements in these sugars are then used to make the plastic called polylactide or PLA.
Advantages of GreenPLA
• Renewable-resourced based resin
• More sustainable alternative to traditional plastic
• Uses 20 to 50 per cent fewer fossil fuels than petroleum-based plastics
• Decomposes to water and carbon dioxide by the action of microorganisms in the environment
• Decomposes quickly in composting facilities without affecting the quality of the compost
• Does not damage furnaces when incinerated because of the low heat of combustion
